I’m afraid this has been me over the last … goodness, over 1 year now, how shocking is that! There is a very good reason for it though, I’ve finally made my dream of an online business a reality 🙂 Squnches Craft Network is the name and helping handmade crafty Australian businesses get recognised is our aim. Providing a directory, calendar for markets and events plus listing upcoming showcases and more. This labor of love has certainly been a lot of hard work, long hours and plenty of cups of tea, but I wouldn’t trade it for the world.
Who else out there has a job they enjoy getting out of bed every morning to work on, even cold Winter mornings?
There is a wonderful feeling when it comes to doing something you love, especially when it involves helping others with their dreams. If you would like to take a look at my business site, head to http://www.squnchescraftnetwork.com.au it would be wonderful to hear some feedback too.
Until my next post, which won’t be too far away I assure you, take care and have a wonderful day.
The last few months I have certainly been hiding under a rock, with good reason though. I have been exceptionally busy putting together my website, which is now online 🙂
Great place to have a look at all the recently listed businesses and take a quick glance at all the upcoming events.
If you are looking for a business to create a product for you or just wanting to see what businesses create what lovely handmade items, this would be your next stop.
Bored of staying home every weekend? Browse through all of the listed upcoming events and you are sure to find a market, event or exhibition you would love to see.
Have a suggestion for the website? Want to introduce yourself or perhaps talk about an event you took part in, whatever it might be, feel free to post a message on our forum 🙂 There are already quite a few topics to chat about, or you could make a new one 🙂
We also have subscriptions available for business owners wanting to list their business. There are a lot more fantastic sections to be added to our website so keep coming back to see what we have added 🙂
Some of you may already know about my business and upcoming website, which has taken a little longer than expected.
Many months ago it all started with an idea, an idea which was not only to help myself with locating things on the internet but also to help others. I’m crafty and creative by nature, holding down a 9-5 job in an office is not my idea of work, its more like a prison sentence and many other crafty people will agree with me here.
Due to the situation at the time and people telling me to ‘get a real job’ or ‘get a normal job’ I went ahead and worked in these offices day after day, week after week, month after month never really succeeding in working in an enjoyable business.
The only thing for me to come out of working was the pay, it wasn’t the kind that would make me wealthy so I could afford everything I ever dreamed of, but it was enough for me at the time to save up and also spend a little on myself, that was until the stress of everything going on at work started making me sick.
Work is supposed to be fun, enjoyable, something you get out of bed for and can’t wait to start because you are so excited to see just what the day has in store. This job just wasn’t it. Due to a wonderful happening, I met my amazing partner and a couple months later I threw in the towel and gave up work, I was stressed almost beyond repair, 27 and it felt like I was having a mid life crisis already.
After some time off to recover I then started to wonder what I was going to do next, we couldn’t survive on just his wage, I couldn’t expect him to do all the work for the rest of his life, that wouldn’t be fair on him.
I took to pen and paper and wrote a list of all the skills and talents I have, all the qualifications and also all the things I enjoy doing the most and I came up with a wonderful business idea, but that was all it was, just an idea.
Determination played a big part in transforming this idea into reality, determination which came from me seeing the situation we were in and thinking ‘enough is enough’ I wasn’t about to see my wonderful partner work himself to the bone just so we could survive.
Although I couldn’t see exactly how this was all going to piece together, I decided to do what I could at the time and I believed that bit by bit the rest would unfold, and it did!
I started forming the database for the website and getting as much information as I could, all the while I was searching online how to put it all together and make it work. The challenge was of course, how to make it all work on a budget, there wasn’t a spare couple thousand dollars sitting in the account for a rainy day. Changes had to be made in the way of spending so as to afford this new business project, just the same as money is set aside for Christmas and Birthdays.
There was still one piece of the puzzle I was needing to achieve and although it was just another piece, it was a very important piece. Putting together the business means contracts, plans, agreements not to mention, setting up financial tables and doing all the registering necessary to make it a business. This is the commitment part, the point of no return, once it is all signed, sealed and delivered then you have to commit.
For something this big I wasn’t about to go it alone and a good friend told me about a course I could take where I could get all the help I needed in doing this, so this then became my next stepping stone and I took hold of it with both hands and never looked back.
Since completing the course, I am officially a business owner, I get to work my own hours from home in a business I thoroughly enjoy. There are still a few things that are a bit daunting here and there but the more I do them, the easier it gets 🙂 Though my website is not yet online, I am much happier than I have been in a long time, I have achieved something that if you had told me 2 years ago I would do, I would have probably smiled and kept walking.
Every day I am excited to get out of bed and work, that’s how it should be for all of us, even on a Sunday, best thing is, the more work I do now to perfect the website, the easier it is for me later and eventually I won’t even have to work eight or even five hours a day. I’m predicting that in a maybe a years time I will only need to work perhaps a total of 12 hours a week. Now that is certainly a goal worth working hard for 🙂
This has been a huge dream of mine for so long, it started out as just a little idea, then a dream and then something which nearly consumed me, to make the best interactive craft business directory around, one that was fun, exciting, full of information and a gallery of photos, where anyone can be a part of it no matter their craft or experience level.
With the help of a really good friend from Inspire Media the website was put together with some really cool software, anyone wanting a website no matter how big or small should get in touch with these guys, they really are fantastic!
For the launch of the website we are offering an amazing deal to all Australian craft businesses.
I will let you all in on a secret now, we are already thinking of expanding to included overseas businesses.
This site was created thanks to a lot of input and many wonderful ideas from everyday people and businesses themselves, it is expected to become something huge!
Not just an ordinary directory, there is a gallery for photos of business stock, your own projects and creations, a calendar for upcoming events where people can comment if they are attending or not and where in the event they might be situated, not only that but a sales section so that any registered and listed business can advertise their upcoming sales.
Its the one stop site for craft businesses and craft minded people, no more searching all over the internet to find what you are looking for, take a look at this site and within moments you can find just what you are looking for.
With my course completed and a determined look on my face, I’m putting together a website for all the creative, arty and crafty people. Targeting Australian business for now, but don’t let that stop you, if there is enough interest then I will be expanding overseas 🙂
Squnches Craft Network is more than just a directory, it brings together the whole of the craft community. Whether you paint with brushes or airbrush, sketch, create bead work, make candles or beautiful cakes, everyone is welcome at Squnches Craft Network.
Everything your little heart desires, in terms of art and craft, can be found on this page. It will take awhile to add businesses but until then the community is welcome to come and be a part of it, share their own creations, let people know what businesses have what stock in store and so on.
The Squnches Craft Network is on track to be online on November 1st this year, so exciting! Craft is a passion of mine and I have dabbled in a few from sketching to knitting, patchwork quilting, beadwork and also crochet 🙂 Anyone is welcome to come along and register to use the site, its free. Businesses can have a look at the business listing deals we have going. We do ask that people don’t advertise to sell their products on this page, if you wish to sell then you need to be a registered business and list your business on the site 🙂
Meanwhile, in my spare time away from working on the website, I have been busily working on this crochet blanket, the patchwork quilt has taken a back seat for the moment but will still be completed for Christmas. I’m a little more excited about the blanket at the moment with all the colours, that and it is a lot easier to work on while relaxing on the couch and watching T.V 🙂
So far I have 50 of the squares made and another 5 of the little rounds completed, already it is looking like it will need more wool.
The challenge for me has been keeping the center of the rounds nice and small, some of these easily fit on my little finger like a ring haha.
Hi to all my followers, so sorry it has been a long time between posts. I’ve just completed a course which was very time consuming but the upside is that now I am qualified to run my own small business (YAY!), exciting times ahead.
On top of that I have been a shoulder of support for a very close friend of mine (Mumma Duck) who is battling with breast cancer along with an amputation. I would like to say that she is on the road to recovery and things are looking up at this stage, she really is a fighter.
I’ve been helping to get her out of hospital into the fresh air and sunshine, away from the smell of the hospital and all the gadgets that beep not to mention the dull and boring surrounds of the ward.
This has all been a challenge for her as she is an interstate truck driver and this is the longest she has been away from trucks for years. We’ve all been getting behind her and supporting her as much as we can because on the highways here she is a well known figure, most know her as Ducky, but to me, she is Mumma Duck.
Best thing so far is that Skitzo (yes some of us do have some crazy nicknames), with the help of Wild Steel, has put together some clothing to raise money for the fight against breast cancer. We do hope that having ‘Skitzo’s fighting for a cure‘ is not taken the wrong way and seen as offensive, we all know him as Skitzo and he is a great guy who is doing his bit to help find a cure, nobody likes to lose a loved one.
If you like any of the above clothing, please go to Wild Steel, type in the search bar, Skitzo’s, and it will bring up the breast cancer clothing for purchase.
Beads are a wonderful touch with just about any form of artwork, add a couple to an embroidery and you got something detailed and beautiful that has a sparkle and catches your eye. But for those of us who are well and truly hooked on beading or just starting to create some mater pieces, I know how you feel when you find a new business to shop at.
I’ve come across another bead business you can add to your list, located here in South Australia in Pooraka or you can of course shop online on their website. Need 4 Bead focus mostly on Seed and Bugle beads, they also have a range of Pendants, Findings and Crystals, all of which are well priced.
Need 4 Bead also have their own Blog along with an Events section where you can keep up to date with what markets and fairs they will be at. With all they have to offer, I would be surprised if you can’t find a thing to work with.
I’ve loved patchwork quilting since I started it as a bit of a hobby a few years ago, though I have to admit that some of the fabric really isn’t that eye catching or inspiring and so you are really having to get intricate with your designs to make the most of the fabric so the end result is eye catching and flows well.
While adding to my huge list, I found a site I wish I had found a long time ago, they stock some amazing panels which are simply breath taking. You can pick from 6″ square panels to 17″ square panels, all are beautiful. There are even sets offered such as Seashell Delight, Magnolia Sky, Leafy Katydid plus you can have a look at Peoples Creations. Certainly value for money and very inspirational.
Naturesface is located in Queensland though they do not give a business address so all your shopping will have to be done online on their website and they offer free postage worldwide on all fabric patch purchases. The patches are made from Organic Cotton Sateen Fabric and you can view larger images to see more detail.
I know where I’ll be buying a pile of fabric for my next patchwork quilt 🙂
Well I was out with my trusty list, once again with the eyes closed and I pointed with my finger landing on a Beading businesses this time. My old weakness thanks to all the colour of the beads that would shine and sparkle at me, begging me to buy them and make a gorgeous necklace or bracelet.
All the colour, the variety, the possibilities, its all so much here in this business for those who love beads 🙂 Bead and Crystal Heaven is the business for today, located at The Entrance in N.S.W or right at your fingertips online, whichever you prefer.
One item that this business has in spades is Swarovski items from crystals, pendants, fasteners and even trimming, if Swarovski is your thing then you will be right at home here. They also supply plenty of other beads such as cats eye beads, cloisonne, Czech and even handmade glass beads, plastic beads along with resin just to add a couple more to the list.
Now everyone knows that if you are working with beads then you need something to string them on and you can find that in this store too, plenty of artistic wire, bead thread, elastics, chains and even cords, everything the happy beadworker could ever want.
If this is perhaps the first time you’ve heard of this business, take a peek at their website and see if it’s something for you, never know, you could just find yourself a bargain. 🙂
We’ve all been bitten by the bug at least once in our lives, I’m not talking about mosquitoes or the flu, I’m talking about a hobby or something you do once and just fall in love with it and have to keep doing it over and over again.
I grew up watching Mum sew and knit, grandma knitted too, so it was pretty hard for me to not follow in their footsteps. I learned to knit before I was even 10 years old, not that it was anything impressive, kept dropping stitches or making them too tight. Then, in the last couple of years I’ve moved on to sewing and in particular quilting.
Thanks to this rather enjoyable hobby, I’ve developed an impressive list of businesses and enjoy sharing with you just what they have to offer, it helps to get people out and about, finding new places and hobbies, even Mum asks me from time to time which business is a good supplier of what.
Today I closed my eyes, pointed my finger at the list and landed on a business over in Western Australia called Carol’s of Midland, everything needed to start up a new hobby of sewing, upgrade what you have or add to that ever towering pile of fabrics already stored in your little craft room.
Looking through the long list of quilt kits, you can see why it is such a great store, quilts for new born babies, cot quilts, kids quilts for both boys and girls and then there are the quilts for the adults. They don’t only stock kits for quilts, they have kits for cushions, table runners and bags too. Don’t panic, if you haven’t got all the accessories they’ll help you out there too, they supply cutters, self healing cutting mats, Janome machines and Pfaff machines and all that goes with these machines.
If you have never done quilting or sewing before in your life then don’t be scared, at Carol’s of Midland you can take a class and learn how to make some of the most basic of designs right up to the more intricate, you’ll be snuggling up to a gorgeous patchwork quilt in no time 🙂
